8 Steps to Updating the Outdoor Lighting in Your Yard

I was honored to be featured in a Gardeningetc article this summer about outdoor lighting ideas called “32 ways to create a cozy glow in your yard after dark.” (Check it out here!)

Lighting is one of my favorite parts of landscape architecture and design because it can have a huge impact on how (and how often) you can use your yard.

However, I know that illuminating your outdoor space can be tricky. You want to find the right balance of practicality and style, all while staying within your budget. And let's not forget about the environmental impact of your choices!

With so many options on the market, it can be tough to know where to start. Here’s how I recommend a do-it-yourself approach to outdoor lighting.

  1. First, identify how you will be using your spaces this year - will you be entertaining, do you have teenagers who will come home after dark, does your pet use the yard at all hours, are outdoor dinners on your wish list, etc.

  2. Then, pinpoint which spaces need to be illuminated to make those activities happen.

  3. Don’t forget to write down areas that will need lights for safety reasons (outside a garage, near sidewalks, along stairs, etc.).

  4. Next, choose focal points in the yard you want to highlight and enjoy after the sun goes down, like trees, an outdoor bar, or statue.

  5. Take a walk through your yard to find lighting locations. Most of  you know I hate “runway” lighting along sidewalks, so what are other ways you can “hide” the source of light to beautifully illuminate the spaces? Think inside hardscapes, under the steps, on a building or tree, and inside the garden. Take notes as you go, along with how many of each type of light you will need.

  6. Make sure you set a budget and prioritize your list so you can finish this in phases if need be.

  7. Research which lights fit your needs. Look at different styles, brands, bulbs, etc. Bookmark or save the products you especially like, and keep track of your cart balance to see if you are still within budget. Don’t forget to purchase any hardware you need to install them, including wall mounts, powercords, the light bulbs themselves!

  8. Finally, buy your lights and safely install them.

Whether you're wanting sleek and modern or warm and rustic, there's sure to be a light solution that's perfect for you. The most important thing is to consider all of the ways you plan to use your space, and put lights in place to make that possible.

I hope this list inspires you to find the perfect way to light up your space! If you need help planning and installing an outdoor lighting solution, contact me to schedule time to chat about it.
