Fall is a critical time for lawn care. By taking the necessary steps now, you can ensure a healthy, vibrant, and resilient lawn next spring. Use this comprehensive checklist to guide your lawn care tasks this month!

Rake and Clean Up

Remove fallen leaves, twigs, and other debris from your lawn to prevent disease and unsightly patches. Rake or blow leaves into piles for composting or disposal. Clean up any pet waste to prevent disease and unsightly patches.

Aerate Your Lawn

Aeration helps to relieve soil compaction and improve water, nutrients, and air penetration to the grassroots. Core aeration is a common method that involves removing small plugs of soil from the lawn. For small and medium-sized yards, you can find a manual aeration tool at your local garden store. However, consider hiring a professional if your lawn is large or compacted.

Overseed

Fill in bare patches and thicken your lawn by over-seeding with appropriate grass seed. Choose a grass seed mix that is suitable for your climate and soil conditions. Sow the seed evenly over the bare areas and lightly rake it into the soil. Water regularly to promote germination.

Fertilize

Apply a fertilizer that is specifically formulated for lawns to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth and winter hardiness. Follow the application instructions on the fertilizer package. Use wildlife-friendly brands when possible, and avoid fertilizing near bodies of water to prevent nutrient runoff.

Water Deeply

Water your lawn deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Aim for 1-2 inches of water once per week, but adjust for rainfall and soil conditions. The key here is to avoid overwatering as this can lead to disease and fungal problems.

Mow Properly

Mow your lawn at the recommended height for your grass type. Cut it too short and you’ll stress out the grass, making it more susceptible to weeds and diseases. Leave the grass clippings on your lawn to decompose and provide nutrients.

Control Weeds

Identify and remove any weeds in the lawn and consider using a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weeds from germinating in the spring. Again, avoid using herbicides near waterways or gardens to protect wildlife and the environment.

Protect Against Pests and Diseases

Monitor your lawn for signs of pests and diseases and take appropriate action to control any infestations or outbreaks. I like using an app like PictureThis if I’m unsure about the health of one of my plants, so do a little research if you suspect damage from pests or diseases in your yard. Consult your local nursery for the best tips on combating pests and diseases.

Additional Tips

  • Protect Trees and Shrubs: Mulch around the base of trees and shrubs to help retain moisture and protect their roots.

  • Winterize Your Sprinkler System: Drain and winterize your sprinkler system to prevent pipes from freezing.

Follow the steps in this guide, and you will give your lawn a head start on spring!
