A cozy outdoor seating area with a black metal chair and a small table, surrounded by lush greenery and blooming flowers.

Dreaming of a vibrant garden but not sure where to begin? Whether you're starting from scratch or revamping an existing space, careful planning is key to creating a thriving and beautiful outdoor oasis. Follow this guide and you will be on your way to a beautiful, thriving garden this year!

Design Inspiration

Let’s start by actually writing out what you want your garden to look like.

1. Define Your Vision

Begin by envisioning your ideal garden. What do you hope to achieve? A tranquil retreat? A vibrant explosion of color? A productive vegetable patch? All of the above? Write out how you want to use each section of your yard (I like to call them outdoor rooms).

2. Consider Your Lifestyle

Think about how you plan to use your garden.

  • Will you be entertaining guests?

  • Relaxing with a book?

  • Playing with children or pets?

  • How much time per week can you spend maintaining your yard? Will you need low-maintenance plants, can you handle any maintenance, or do you want to outsource the upkeep?

3. Gather Inspiration

Draw inspiration from a variety of sources. Browse gardening magazines, explore online resources like Pinterest and Instagram, and visit local gardens for ideas. Observe how different plants are used, note the color combinations that appeal to you, and consider how various elements, such as water features or seating areas, can enhance your outdoor space.

Plant Selection

Then, you can move on to identify plants that fit into your vision and space.

4. Assess Your Space

Before selecting plants, carefully assess your garden's conditions. Take note of how much sunlight each area gets during the day, soil type, moisture levels whether you can water areas as needed, and space constraints such as size or obstructions.

5. Choose the Right Plants

Select plants that thrive in your local climate and soil conditions. I love finding native plants for a low-maintenance and eco-friendly option. You can do a quick online search to find varieties native to your area and write down plants that fit within your requirements.

I also love taking a stroll through a local nursery to see what options are available and reading the tags of plants I like to see if they would work within my yard’s conditions.

6. Embrace Variety

Incorporate a diverse range of plants with varying heights, textures, and bloom times for visual interest and ensure year-round beauty in your garden. Mix leafy plants with bright blooms and consider what you will need for different areas of the yard (hedges for parameters for example).

Maintenance Tips

Finally, all of this work would be for naught if you do not have a maintenance plan.

7. Create a maintenance plan.

Here are a few things to consider and tips for creating a thriving garden:

  • Water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth.

  • Apply a layer of mulch to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil health.

  • Feed your plants with appropriate fertilizers at the right time of year.

  • Prune shrubs and trees to maintain their shape, encourage healthy growth, and control their size.

  • Stay on top of weeds to prevent them from competing with your plants for resources and nutrients.

Of course, these tips are general, so do not forget to check the care instructions for your new plants.

Every garden is unique, and following this guide helps you create a beautiful, thriving landscape that fits your personality and lifestyle.
