Get Creative with Your Holiday Yard Decorating

Bart the holiday frog

The holidays are here and it's time to start thinking about decking the halls of our homes and yards. Decorating your yard for the holidays is a great way to spread holiday cheer and add some extra festive charm to your home. No matter what you celebrate, this guide is here to help you get creative with your holiday yard decorating this year!

Repurpose and Recycle

One of the best ways to get creative with your holiday yard decorating is to repurpose and recycle items from around your house. For example, you can use old Christmas ornaments to make a unique wreath for your front door by simply hot gluing the ornaments to a wreath and finishing it off with a bow. Or, put new strings on the ornaments and hang them from a tree in the front yard.

Lighting

One of the easiest ways to add cheer to your yard is by adding lights. You can use traditional Christmas lights, fairy lights, or even lanterns to create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Consider wrapping lights around trees, bushes, or even your home's architecture to create a captivating display. (Just be safe if you are using ladders!)

DIY Decorations

Another way to get creative with your holiday yard decorating is by making your own decorations. This can be a fun activity for the whole family to enjoy. Some ideas to get you started include creating snowmen from repurposed materials, crafting wreaths or garlands, cutting out lots of paper snowflakes, or even building your own outdoor nativity scene. YouTube can be a great resource if you’re looking for ideas with some step-by-step instructions!

Winter Wonderland

Bring the magic of a winter wonderland to your yard, even if you don’t want to lean into the holiday itself. Adorn your yard with wintery cutouts of snowflakes or icicles. Find fun winter window stickers to greet your friends and neighbors when they pass by.

I love this time of year because we can all get so playful and whimsical with yard decorations! Hopefully, these ideas have given you some inspiration for your holiday yard decorating. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and let your creativity run wild. Whether you choose to repurpose old items, try a new DIY decoration, or simply add a little lighting, the goal is to create a display that brings you and your family joy!

*A little photo backstory: I try to add a focal point in every outdoor room, ideally something that speaks to the owner's personality or the function of the space. In this yard, my initial sketches included a beautiful urn. I was still getting to know these amazing clients, and in the design presentation meeting one of them looked at the drawing and said, "We aren't urn people.” I laughed and thought, challenge accepted. I knew this piece needed to put a smile on my clients' faces every time they glanced at it... So we searched for the right piece, and finally, we found it. Lovingly named Bartholomew, "Bart" the Frog.
